Frequently Asked Questions
The questions we hear most, answered the way we answer them by email.
Reports & coverage
What does a TrulyCar report include?
Everything we can document about the vehicle's life: title events by state with the odometer reading at each, title and salvage brands from every state, reported accidents with photos where they exist, the odometer's reading-by-reading history, theft records, open recalls, the factory maintenance schedule, warranty terms, and market values by condition.
Can a report miss things?
Yes, and any provider that says otherwise is selling you certainty they do not have. Damage settled privately with no claim, no auction, and no title event can stay off every record. The report catches what was reported; the in-person inspection covers the rest, and our check pages walk you through both.
Where does the data come from?
Official government and industry records, matched to the exact VIN. Title brands like salvage, junk, rebuilt, and flood, along with insurance total-loss and junk-yard records, come through NMVTIS, the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System, a federal database run under the U.S. Department of Justice that state title agencies report into; the DOJ publishes a plain-language consumer page about what it covers at vehiclehistory.bja.ojp.gov. Factory build specifications and open safety recalls come from NHTSA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. On top of the federal records, TrulyCar reports pull salvage and wholesale auction archives, including photos when they exist for the VIN, theft records, and a chronological odometer trail. Every report names what it found and, just as plainly, what it did not find, so an empty section means the databases returned nothing for that VIN.
Do you support classic cars?
Yes. Pre-1981 vehicles used short serial numbers, 5 to 16 characters, and our search accepts them. Records are thinner for classics, and the report says so plainly instead of padding.
Pricing & credits
How much does a report cost?
One report is $16.99 as a single payment. Packs bring the per-report price down, and every pack purchase adds report credits to your account that you spend whenever you like. There is no subscription and nothing renews.
Is the VIN decoder really free?
Completely. The decode identifies the vehicle from the manufacturer's own regulatory filings, with no account and no card. You only ever pay for the full history report.
Do credits expire?
No. Credits sit on your account until you use them.
Refunds
What happens if my report fails or comes back empty?
If we cannot compile a report for your VIN, a single-report purchase is refunded to your card and a pack purchase gets the credit returned to your balance, automatically. If the report completes but has no history records on file at all, it is still delivered and a report credit is added back to your account for another VIN. No support ticket needed.
Can I re-run a report I bought?
Every report includes free re-checks for 30 days, so you can refresh it while you negotiate without paying again.
Plate lookups & privacy
How does a license plate lookup work?
A plate is registered to exactly one vehicle at a time, so we resolve the plate and its state to the VIN and run the same free decode and report from there.
Can I find out who owns a car?
No, and no legitimate service can offer that. Federal privacy law (the Driver's Privacy Protection Act) protects owner names and addresses. What you get is the vehicle's history, which is what a purchase decision actually needs.
What do you do with my data?
The short version: your email for your account, Stripe handles cards so we never see them, and we do not sell personal data. The full detail is in our privacy policy.
