What is a VIN?
The Vehicle Identification Number is a car's fingerprint: a 17-character serial that identifies one vehicle and no other, standardized for every car sold in the US since 1981. The letters I, O, and Q never appear, because on a stamped metal plate they are too easy to mistake for 1 and 0.
Regulators have required the VIN to be visible through the windshield since 1968, which is why you can read it from the sidewalk. Plates change, owners change, paint changes. The VIN is the identity that survives all of it, and it is what every record in a vehicle's history is filed under.
How to decode a VIN, position by position
All 17 characters have assigned jobs. Here is the map, using a real decode-friendly example:

Positions 1-3: who built it, and where in the world
The World Manufacturer Identifier names the maker and its build region. The very first character alone places the factory on the map:

The common codes for US-market vehicles. A few newer American plants use 7, Rivian and Tesla's Texas factory among them, so treat the table as a guide, not a law.
Positions 4-8: what the vehicle is
The Vehicle Descriptor Section spells out the model, body style, restraint system, and, for most makers, the engine. Two trucks that look identical on a lot can differ here by cab, drivetrain, and displacement, differences worth thousands that the decoder reads in a second.
Position 9: the check digit
A number computed from every other character with a federal formula. Change any character and the math breaks, which makes position 9 a built-in forgery alarm. Our decoder verifies it before anything else, and a VIN that fails is a listing to walk away from.
Position 10: the model year
One character encodes the model year, cycling through letters and digits on a 30-year loop:
Year codes repeat every 30 years. Position 7 settles the cycle: on 17-character VINs, a letter there means the vehicle is from 2010 or later, a digit means 1981-2009.
Positions 11-17: the plant and the serial
Position 11 is the assembly plant's own letter, and the last six characters are the production serial, the part that makes this VIN belong to one physical car. Cloned VINs borrow a clean car's identity wholesale, which is why the report checks that the identity and the title trail agree.
VIN lookup, VIN decoder, VIN check: what's the difference?
The three terms get used interchangeably, and mostly they can be. Strictly speaking, a VIN decoder translates the 17 characters themselves into what the factory built: year, make, model, engine. A VIN lookup is the act of searching with a VIN. A VIN check goes further and pulls the vehicle's records: titles, brands, accidents, odometer readings, theft reports.

Where to find the VIN
Off the car, the VIN is printed on the title, the registration, and the insurance card. Any serious listing includes it, and a seller who will not share the VIN has answered your first question already.
Classic cars, motorcycles, and cars with no VIN in sight
Pre-1981 classics
Older vehicles used short serials, 5 to 16 characters with no check digit. Most decoders reject them; ours accepts them and searches the sources that actually hold classic records.
Motorcycles
Motorcycle VINs follow the same 17-character standard but decode differently. We don't support them yet, and we say so here rather than quietly failing.
No VIN? Use the plate
A license plate lookup resolves the plate to its VIN and runs the same decode. It is the way in when all you have is a photo.
