What does a VIN check show?
The free decode shows what the car is: year, make, model, engine, and factory equipment straight from the manufacturer's filings. The full report adds what the car has been through: state title events with odometer readings, title and salvage brands, reported accidents, odometer readings over time, theft records, open recalls, the factory maintenance schedule, warranty terms, and market values by condition.
Is the VIN decoder really free?
Yes. Decoding uses public NHTSA data and costs you nothing. No account, no card, and no trial that converts into a subscription. You only pay if you want the full history report, and that's a single payment per report.
Which vehicles are covered?
Any car, truck, SUV, or van with a standard 17-character VIN sold in the US, plus pre-1981 classics with shorter VINs. Classic coverage is limited to what exists in the historical record, and if we can't produce a report for one, you're refunded automatically.
How fast is the report?
The decode is instant. A full report usually takes under a minute to compile, and a VIN we've already pulled within the last 30 days opens immediately.
Can a report miss things?
Yes, and any provider claiming otherwise is overselling. A history report contains what was reported. An accident fixed in a driveway, or a repair paid in cash, never enters any database. Treat the report as one strong input alongside an inspection and a test drive, not a substitute for them.
What's the difference between the free check and the paid report?
The free check identifies the vehicle. The paid report investigates it: every history section, the photo archive, and the value data come from paid industry sources, which is why that half costs money: $16.99 once, less in packs, no subscription.
Do you cover classic cars?
Yes. VINs from before 1981 (5 to 16 characters) are accepted, which most big-name services turn away. Records thin out the further back you go, so classic reports include whatever the historical record holds, and produce an automatic refund when it holds nothing.
