Buying a used BMW?
BMW started building aircraft engines in Munich in 1916 and put its first car on the road in 1928. The 3 Series has anchored the lineup since 1975. Less known: BMW's largest factory in the world is in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where every X3 through X7 is built, so a big share of BMW SUVs carry American VINs starting with 5UX or 5YM.
The used BMW market is enormous and unforgiving. Off-lease 3 Series and X3s are everywhere and genuinely cheap for what they are, but the badge attracts a second wave of owners who defer maintenance, and repair costs do not care what you paid for the car. The gap between a cared-for BMW and a neglected one is wider than in almost any other brand, and the history report is the fastest way to tell which one is in front of you.
BMW history: what to verify before you buy
Every brand has its own used-market patterns. These are the ones worth checking on a BMW, and where the report answers each one.
Timing chain wear on 4-cylinder turbos
The N20 four-cylinder turbo used in many 2012 to 2015 models had timing chain problems that led to a class-action settlement and extended coverage. The odometer history in the report tells you whether a car from those years is inside or far past the extended window.
High-pressure fuel pump era
The twin-turbo N54 engine in 2007 to 2010 models went through repeated fuel pump failures, recalls, and warranty extensions. Cars of that generation reward a careful look at recall status and service cadence, both of which the report lays out.
Takata airbag campaigns
BMW recalled hundreds of thousands of cars for Takata inflators, including popular 3 Series generations. The recall section shows whether the work is still outstanding on the exact VIN you are considering.
Rebuilt wrecks at retail prices
Crashed BMWs are profitable to rebuild because clean examples sell for so much. Auction photos in the report show the car at its worst moment, before the respray, which is evidence no test drive can give you.
How to decode a BMW VIN
Every BMW built since 1981 carries a 17-character VIN, and each position means something specific. Here is how to read one yourself, or paste it above and let the decoder do it in seconds.
Example VIN for illustration. Positions 1 to 3 identify the manufacturer, 4-8 describe the vehicle, 9 is the check digit, 10 is the model year, 11 is the assembly plant, and 12-17 are the serial number.
Positions 1-3: where your BMW was built
The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned to a specific company, country, and vehicle type. This is the fastest answer to the question of which factory built the car.
| WMI code | Built in | Typically used on |
|---|---|---|
| WBA | Germany | Standard BMW cars such as the 3 and 5 Series |
| WBS | Germany (BMW M) | M models such as the M3 and M5 |
| WBY | Germany | BMW i electric models such as the i3 and i4 |
| 5UX | Spartanburg, South Carolina | US-built X-line SUVs such as the X3, X5, and X7 |
| 5YM | Spartanburg, South Carolina | US-built X M performance SUVs |
| 4US | Spartanburg, South Carolina | Earlier US-built models such as the Z3 and first X5s |
Common BMW manufacturer codes. Codes vary by model, plant, and era, so a code outside this table is not by itself a red flag. The free decoder above resolves any BMW VIN to its exact factory record.
Positions 4-8: what the vehicle is
BMW packs the model series, body style, engine, and drive layout into positions 4 through 8, which is how a rear-drive 330i and an all-wheel-drive 330i xDrive get told apart before you ever open the door.
Position 9: the check digit
A number computed from all the other characters using a federal formula. If someone alters a VIN by hand, the math stops working. It is the first thing our decoder verifies, and a failed check digit on a listing is a walk-away signal.
Position 10: the model year
One character encodes the model year. Letters and digits alternate in a 30-year cycle, so the same code serves two eras:
Year codes repeat every 30 years. Position 7 settles the cycle: on 17-character VINs, a letter there means the vehicle is from 2010 or later, a digit means 1981-2009.
Positions 11-17: plant and serial number
Position 11 names the assembly plant within the factory network, and the final six characters are the serial number, unique to this one BMW. Together with the rest of the VIN, they make the identity impossible to share honestly, which is exactly why cloned VINs are worth checking for.
