Buying a used Infiniti?

Infiniti launched in 1989, the same year as Lexus, as Nissan's luxury division. The G35 and G37 sport sedans gave the brand its enthusiast credibility in the 2000s; today the lineup centers on the Q50 sedan and the QX60 and QX80 SUVs.

Infinitis depreciate faster than their German and Japanese rivals, which makes them some of the best raw value on the used luxury market and also some of the most scrutinized. Steep depreciation attracts rebuilders, since a lightly damaged QX60 costs little at auction and resells near clean-market money. The gap between those two cars lives entirely in the history report.

Infiniti history: what to verify before you buy

Every brand has its own used-market patterns. These are the ones worth checking on an Infiniti, and where the report answers each one.

CVT service history on QX60s

The continuously variable transmission in 2014 to 2016 QX60s drew enough complaints that Nissan extended coverage on related models. The odometer chronology alongside the factory maintenance schedule shows whether a given car's miles and service expectations line up.

Timing chain wear on older G sedans

Mid-2000s G35s and related V6 models had documented timing chain tensioner issues. On cars this age, a coherent mileage history with no gaps is the best available signal of a drivetrain that was maintained rather than endured.

Rebuilt luxury at retail prices

Fast depreciation makes lightly crashed Infinitis profitable to rebuild and resell. Title brands, reported damage, and salvage-auction photos in the report reveal the rebuild the fresh paint conceals.

Off-lease reconditioning

Most used Infinitis are lease returns prepared for certified lots. The report's damage and auction records show what happened during the lease years, before the detailer got involved.

How to decode an Infiniti VIN

Every Infiniti built since 1981 carries a 17-character VIN, and each position means something specific. Here is how to read one yourself, or paste it above and let the decoder do it in seconds.

Example VIN for illustration. Positions 1 to 3 identify the manufacturer, 4-8 describe the vehicle, 9 is the check digit, 10 is the model year, 11 is the assembly plant, and 12-17 are the serial number.

Positions 1-3: where your Infiniti was built

The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned to a specific company, country, and vehicle type. This is the fastest answer to the question of which factory built the car.

Positions 4-8: what the vehicle is

Infiniti VINs carry the model line, engine, body, and restraint data in positions 4 through 8, separating rear-drive and all-wheel-drive Q50s that look identical from the curb.

Position 9: the check digit

A number computed from all the other characters using a federal formula. If someone alters a VIN by hand, the math stops working. It is the first thing our decoder verifies, and a failed check digit on a listing is a walk-away signal.

Position 10: the model year

One character encodes the model year. Letters and digits alternate in a 30-year cycle, so the same code serves two eras:

Year codes repeat every 30 years. Position 7 settles the cycle: on 17-character VINs, a letter there means the vehicle is from 2010 or later, a digit means 1981-2009.

Positions 11-17: plant and serial number

Position 11 names the assembly plant within the factory network, and the final six characters are the serial number, unique to this one Infiniti. Together with the rest of the VIN, they make the identity impossible to share honestly, which is exactly why cloned VINs are worth checking for.

Infiniti VIN check FAQ

What do Infiniti VINs start with?

Most Infinitis are Japan-built and start with JNK, JN1, or JN8 depending on model and body type. The QX56 and QX80 built in Canton, Mississippi start with 5N3. All are normal on US listings; the decode ties the exact prefix to the exact factory.

Is a cheap used QX60 a red flag?

Cheap by itself is just depreciation, which is the honest appeal of the brand. Cheap plus a thin or evasive history is the red flag. The report settles it: title brands, damage records, auction photos, and the odometer trail either support the price or explain it.

Is the Infiniti VIN decoder really free?

Yes. The decode identifies the exact vehicle: model year, model and trim, engine, drivetrain, and factory equipment as filed with US regulators, at no cost and with no account required. The paid report is only for the vehicle's history.

What does the full Infiniti history report add?

The report covers the vehicle's life: title and salvage brands, reported damage with photos, odometer chronology, theft records, open recalls, the factory maintenance schedule, warranty terms, and market values, for $16.99 once, with no subscription.

Does a clean-looking Infiniti still need a check?

The clean-looking ones are the point. Cosmetic repairs hide accident history from the eye but not from the record, and an odometer can be rolled back in minutes. Ten minutes of reading beats years of paying for someone else's secret.

How fast is an Infiniti VIN check?

The free decode returns in seconds. The full report typically takes under a minute to compile, and you can read it online or download it as a PDF.
