Buying a used Rivian?
Rivian was founded in 2009 and delivered the R1T pickup in late 2021, beating the legacy manufacturers' electric trucks to customers. The R1T, R1S SUV, and Amazon delivery vans are all built in Normal, Illinois, in a former Mitsubishi plant, and the upcoming R2 line is designed to take the brand mainstream.
Used Rivians are new territory: young vehicles, strong prices, and a history profile unlike combustion trucks. Early-production examples accumulated recall campaigns as real-world miles piled up, and EVs in general get declared total losses more readily because battery packs are expensive to certify after damage. That makes salvage-rebuilt examples a growing share of the cheap listings, and the report the fastest way to spot them.
Rivian history: what to verify before you buy
Every brand has its own used-market patterns. These are the ones worth checking on a Rivian, and where the report answers each one.
Early-production recall cadence
First-build R1Ts and R1Ss collected recalls, some fixed over the air and some requiring service visits. The report lists open campaigns against the VIN; anything outstanding is a free fix at a Rivian service center.
Totaled EVs returning as rebuilds
Insurers total electric trucks readily because post-crash battery certification is costly, so lightly damaged Rivians flow into salvage auctions and back out as rebuilds. Title brands and auction photos in the report show exactly what happened.
Battery history after damage or flood
Water and impact damage are the two things a used EV buyer cannot see and cannot afford to guess about. Flood brands, damage records, and the photo archive establish whether the pack's history deserves a professional inspection before purchase.
A young service network
Rivian's service footprint is still growing, so out-of-warranty repairs depend on distance and parts. The warranty terms in the report help you establish what factory coverage remains on a given truck.
How to decode a Rivian VIN
Every Rivian built since 1981 carries a 17-character VIN, and each position means something specific. Here is how to read one yourself, or paste it above and let the decoder do it in seconds.
Example VIN for illustration. Positions 1 to 3 identify the manufacturer, 4-8 describe the vehicle, 9 is the check digit, 10 is the model year, 11 is the assembly plant, and 12-17 are the serial number.
Positions 1-3: where your Rivian was built
The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned to a specific company, country, and vehicle type. This is the fastest answer to the question of which factory built the car.
| WMI code | Built in | Typically used on |
|---|---|---|
| 7FC | Normal, Illinois | R1T pickups and R1S SUVs |
Common Rivian manufacturer codes. Codes vary by model, plant, and era, so a code outside this table is not by itself a red flag. The free decoder above resolves any Rivian VIN to its exact factory record.
Positions 4-8: what the vehicle is
Rivian's positions 4 through 8 encode the model, battery and motor configuration, and restraint system, which is where dual-motor and quad-motor trucks separate.
Position 9: the check digit
A number computed from all the other characters using a federal formula. If someone alters a VIN by hand, the math stops working. It is the first thing our decoder verifies, and a failed check digit on a listing is a walk-away signal.
Position 10: the model year
One character encodes the model year. Letters and digits alternate in a 30-year cycle, so the same code serves two eras:
Year codes repeat every 30 years. Position 7 settles the cycle: on 17-character VINs, a letter there means the vehicle is from 2010 or later, a digit means 1981-2009.
Positions 11-17: plant and serial number
Position 11 names the assembly plant within the factory network, and the final six characters are the serial number, unique to this one Rivian. Together with the rest of the VIN, they make the identity impossible to share honestly, which is exactly why cloned VINs are worth checking for.
