Buying a used Toyota?
Toyota has built cars since 1937 and built them in America since the 1980s; the Georgetown, Kentucky plant is its largest anywhere, and Camrys, RAV4s, Highlanders, and Tundras roll out of factories across the South. The Camry spent two decades as America's best-selling car, and the RAV4 inherited the crown among SUVs.
Toyota's durability is precisely what complicates its used market: the cars are worth so much for so long that they attract every scheme that feeds on value. Odometer fraud pays best on a truck that books high at any mileage. Tacomas and 4Runners hold value so stubbornly that stolen and cloned examples circulate. The brand is the safest bet in the business, and the individual VIN still deserves its five minutes.
Toyota history: what to verify before you buy
Every brand has its own used-market patterns. These are the ones worth checking on a Toyota, and where the report answers each one.
Rollback economics on trucks
A Tacoma or Tundra gains thousands in book value from a rolled-back odometer, and clean interiors make the lie plausible. The report lists every reported reading in sequence, which is where rollbacks die.
Frame rust programs on older trucks
Toyota ran frame-replacement and inspection programs for rust-prone 2000s Tacomas, Tundras, and Sequoias, a fact every used-truck buyer in the salt belt should know. The registration trail maps a truck's winters, and northern history plus that era equals inspect the frame first.
Camry and Corolla theft volume
America's most common cars are also among its most stolen, largely for parts. The theft check confirms the car was never reported stolen and its identity matches the title.
Takata recalls on 2000s models
Takata inflator campaigns covered popular Corollas, Camrys, and trucks from the 2000s and early 2010s. The recall section shows whether the work was completed on the exact VIN.
How to decode a Toyota VIN
Every Toyota built since 1981 carries a 17-character VIN, and each position means something specific. Here is how to read one yourself, or paste it above and let the decoder do it in seconds.
Example VIN for illustration. Positions 1 to 3 identify the manufacturer, 4-8 describe the vehicle, 9 is the check digit, 10 is the model year, 11 is the assembly plant, and 12-17 are the serial number.
Positions 1-3: where your Toyota was built
The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned to a specific company, country, and vehicle type. This is the fastest answer to the question of which factory built the car.
| WMI code | Built in | Typically used on |
|---|---|---|
| 4T1 | Georgetown, Kentucky | US-built Camry sedans |
| 2T1 | Cambridge, Ontario, Canada | Canadian-built Corollas |
| 5YF | Blue Springs, Mississippi | US-built Corollas |
| 5TD | Princeton, Indiana | US-built SUVs and minivans such as the Highlander and Sienna |
| 5TF | San Antonio, Texas | US-built Tundra pickups |
| 3TM | Baja California, Mexico | Mexican-built Tacoma pickups |
| JTD | Japan | Japan-built cars such as the Prius |

Positions 4-8: what the vehicle is
Toyota's positions 4 through 8 identify the model line, engine, and body, separating hybrids from gas models and the trim families that share a silhouette.
Position 9: the check digit
A number computed from all the other characters using a federal formula. If someone alters a VIN by hand, the math stops working. It is the first thing our decoder verifies, and a failed check digit on a listing is a walk-away signal.
Position 10: the model year
One character encodes the model year. Letters and digits alternate in a 30-year cycle, so the same code serves two eras:
Year codes repeat every 30 years. Position 7 settles the cycle: on 17-character VINs, a letter there means the vehicle is from 2010 or later, a digit means 1981-2009.
Positions 11-17: plant and serial number
Position 11 names the assembly plant within the factory network, and the final six characters are the serial number, unique to this one Toyota. Together with the rest of the VIN, they make the identity impossible to share honestly, which is exactly why cloned VINs are worth checking for.
