What is a vehicle history report?

A vehicle history report is a record of a car's past, compiled from official databases and matched to its 17-character VIN. Whether you are buying, selling, or checking a car you already own, it surfaces problems no test drive will show:

  • Title & brands. Salvage, rebuilt, or flood brands from NMVTIS, the federal title system run by the U.S. Department of Justice, plus each state title event with its date and odometer reading.

  • Odometer & records. A chronological odometer trail with rollback detection, plus reported accidents and theft records matched to the VIN.

  • Recalls, photos & value. Open recall status from NHTSA, auction photos where they exist, and an estimated market value for the car's condition.

It matters most when you are buying from a private seller, bidding at auction, or purchasing sight unseen. Dealers and lenders run these checks on nearly every used transaction.

AI summary, generated from the records in this report

Negotiate

Clean title and consistent mileage, but one open airbag recall and a minor front-bumper damage record give you room to ask for a better price.

The good

  • Clean title with no salvage, junk, or flood brands across two states.
  • Six odometer readings in order, from 23 to 88,300 miles, with no discrepancy.
  • Five factory service intervals were due by 88,300 miles; the schedule lists each one with its typical cost.

Watch out

  • Open recall 20V-123: the passenger airbag inflator may rupture in a crash.
  • Minor front bumper damage reported in CA in 2018, no structural damage.

Ask the seller

  • Has the free airbag recall repair been scheduled at a BMW dealer?
  • Do you have the repair invoice for the 2018 front bumper damage?
  • Can you show receipts for the 60,000-mile service, spark plugs and coolant inspection?

Frequently asked questions

What's included in a TrulyCar vehicle history report?

Every full report covers NMVTIS title history, with each state title event dated and its odometer reading, salvage, junk, flood, rebuilt, and buyback brands, total-loss history, an odometer trail with rollback checks, accident and damage records with photos where available, theft records, NHTSA recalls, vehicle specifications, and an estimated market value.

Is the VIN decode really free?

Yes. Decoding a VIN or looking up a license plate shows you the vehicle's make, model, year, and specifications at no cost. You only pay when you unlock the full history report.

Where does the data come from?

TrulyCar is an approved consumer-access provider of NMVTIS, the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System, the federal title database run under the U.S. Department of Justice that state title agencies report into. That is where title brands like salvage, junk, rebuilt, and flood live, along with insurance total-loss and junk-yard records; the DOJ publishes a plain-language consumer page about what the system covers at vehiclehistory.bja.ojp.gov. Factory build specifications and open safety recalls come from NHTSA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. On top of the federal records, reports pull salvage and wholesale auction archives, including photos when they exist for the VIN, theft records, and a chronological odometer trail. Every report names what it found and, just as plainly, what it did not find, so an empty section means the databases returned nothing for that VIN.

How fast do I get my report?

Reports are generated in seconds after checkout. You can view them in your dashboard, download a PDF, or print a certificate-style copy.

Does TrulyCar use AI?

Two features, both built on your report's own records. TrulyBear's Read is a plain-English summary with a Buy, Negotiate, or Walk Away verdict, generated from the records in your report and validated against them. Ask TrulyCar is a chat on every paid report that answers questions about that specific car; anything drawn from general car knowledge rather than your report is labeled as such, and neither feature ever invents a record or a price.

Do report credits expire?

No. Credits from any pack stay in your account until you use them, and you can run a report on any VIN whenever you're ready.

What if a report can't be generated, or comes back empty?

If we can't produce a report for your VIN, you're refunded or re-credited automatically. If it comes back with no history records on file at all, you keep the report and a credit is added back to your account for another VIN. No ticket, no request.
