The nhtsa vin decoder (officially the vPIC decoder, short for Vehicle Product Information Catalog) is a free government tool that takes a 17-character VIN and returns the factory build data the manufacturer reported: make, model, model year, body class, engine, plant, and safety equipment. It costs nothing, it has no sign-up, and it's the most reliable place to confirm what a vehicle was when it left the line. What it will never tell you is what happened to that vehicle afterward, which is exactly the part that decides whether a used car is worth $12,000 or $4,500.

This guide walks through the decoder screen by screen, then shows you the recall lookup, then maps out the records NHTSA simply doesn't hold.

What you need before you start

  • The full 17-character VIN. Every passenger vehicle sold in the US since the 1981 model year uses a standardized 17-character VIN. It never contains the letters I, O, or Q, so if you think you see one, you're looking at a 1, a 0, or a 9.

  • A photo of the VIN, not a typed message from the seller. Ask for a picture of the dash plate through the windshield plus the driver's door jamb sticker. Mismatched VINs between those two spots are a hard stop.

  • The model year, if you know it. The decoder has an optional year field that improves results on older vehicles and on partial VINs.

  • Five minutes. That's the whole job.

How to use the NHTSA VIN decoder, step by step

  1. Open the decoder. Go to vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/decoder. You'll land on the Decode VIN tab. There are also tabs for batch decoding and for browsing manufacturer data, which you can ignore for a single car.

  2. Type the VIN into the input box. Enter all 17 characters with no spaces or dashes. Copy and paste if you can, because one transposed character will either fail the check digit or return a different vehicle entirely.

  3. Fill in the model year field if you have it. It's optional. On vehicles from the 1980s and 1990s, and on any partial VIN, supplying the year sharpens the output because the 10th VIN character cycles through a 30-year loop.

  4. Click the decode button. Results load on the same page in a matter of seconds. No account, no email capture.

  5. Read the top block first. The decoder returns a Vehicle Descriptor plus the core identity fields: Make, Manufacturer Name, Model, Model Year, Body Class, Vehicle Type, and Plant City / Plant Country. This block is your fraud check. If the seller advertised a 2016 Silverado 2500HD and the decoder says 2015 Silverado 1500, walk.

  6. Scroll to the mechanical fields. Further down you'll find Engine Number of Cylinders, Displacement (L), Engine Model, Fuel Type - Primary, Drive Type, Transmission Style, and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating class. Compare Displacement and Drive Type to the ad. A 3.5L front-wheel-drive crossover listed as "AWD, V6 Sport" is either a typo or a sales pitch.

  7. Check the safety equipment rows. Air Bag Locations (front, side, curtain, knee), Seat Belt Type, Electronic Stability Control, Tire Pressure Monitoring System type, and on newer vehicles, driver assistance fields like Forward Collision Warning or Blind Spot Warning. These come from what the manufacturer filed, so they describe what the vehicle was built with. They say nothing about whether the airbags are still in the car, which matters a lot on a rebuilt vehicle.

  8. Note the error and note fields. vPIC returns an Error Code and Error Text along with the data. "0" means a clean decode. Anything else tells you what the system couldn't resolve, and I'll cover the common ones below.

  9. Export if you're doing volume. There's a download option on the results page, and the batch tab accepts multiple VINs at once. Small dealers who appraise a dozen trades a week usually end up using the free vPIC API instead, since it returns the same fields as JSON or XML.

  10. Run the recall check as a second step. The decoder and the recall lookup are different tools on different pages. A clean decode does not mean a recall-free car.

How to check vehicle recalls by VIN

Go to nhtsa.gov/recalls, enter the same 17-character VIN, and search. The tool reports safety recalls that are still unrepaired on that specific vehicle, based on what the manufacturer has submitted.

Three limits worth knowing, all of which NHTSA states on the page itself:

  • Coverage runs back roughly 15 calendar years. A 2004 vehicle with an open campaign may show nothing.

  • It covers recalls from major manufacturers. Low-volume builders, some motorcycle brands, and certain trailer and equipment makers aren't in the system.

  • Completed repairs disappear from the result. So does anything the manufacturer handles as a customer satisfaction campaign or a technical service bulletin rather than a formal safety recall.

Practical upshot: "0 open recalls" is a useful data point and not a clean bill of health. If a recall matters to you, such as the multi-year Takata inflator campaigns, call a franchise dealer with the VIN and ask them to pull the campaign history in the manufacturer's own system. Recall repairs are free at the dealer regardless of who owns the car.

What the NHTSA VIN decoder hides

"Hides" is a bit unfair, since NHTSA isn't concealing anything. vPIC was built to standardize factory specifications, not to track vehicle events. But shoppers routinely treat a clean decode as a clean car, and that gap costs real money. Here's what the nhtsa vin decoder does not contain:

Title brands and total-loss history

Nothing in vPIC tells you a 2019 Accord was declared a total loss in Louisiana in 2021, sold at salvage auction, rebuilt, and retitled in Tennessee. Title data lives in state DMV systems, which feed the federal NMVTIS database. Roughly one in six vehicles I'd call "suspiciously cheap for the mileage" turns out to have a brand in its past. Title washing is exactly the practice of moving a branded car across state lines until the brand drops off the paperwork.

Odometer chronology

The decoder has no mileage field at all. It can't, because mileage isn't a build attribute. Rollbacks get caught by comparing readings across time: inspections, title transfers, service visits, auction runs. A 2017 F-150 that read 128,000 miles at a 2022 title transfer and 79,000 on today's listing is telling you something. We cover the pattern in detail in our guide to spotting odometer rollback.

Damage events and photos

Collision, hail, flood, theft recovery: none of it appears. Insurance claim records, police crash reports, and salvage auction listings hold that information, and auction photo archives are often the single most useful thing a buyer can see, because they show the car mid-repair before anyone had a chance to hide the damage.

Ownership and usage

Number of owners, states of registration, whether it spent three years as a rental or a delivery vehicle, how long it sat on a lot. All outside the decoder's scope.

Trim and options, half the time

This surprises people. Manufacturers file to different levels of detail, so the Series and Trim fields come back populated for some makes and empty or vague for others. On a 2018 3 Series you might get "330i" and nothing about the M Sport package. For build-specific options, the manufacturer's own owner portal or the original window sticker is a better source.

Money

No values, no price history, no warranty status. The decoder will tell you the car is a 2021 Tacoma SR5. It won't tell you the remaining powertrain coverage or what the trade-in versus retail spread looks like at 61,000 miles.

Where an NMVTIS title check fits in

NMVTIS is the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System, run by the US Department of Justice. States, insurers, junkyards, and salvage operators report into it, which makes it the authoritative source for title brands, current title state, last reported odometer reading on the title, and total-loss records. Troubleshooting common errors

"Check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly"

The 9th VIN character is a math checksum over the other 16. This error almost always means a typo: a 1 read as an I, a 0 as an O, an 8 as a B. Re-enter from a photo rather than from memory. If the VIN is transcribed correctly and still fails, be careful. Cloned and altered VINs fail the check digit, and so do some low-volume imports that never followed the US standard properly.

Blank Model, Series, or Trim fields

Not an error. The manufacturer didn't file that level of detail for that year and line. Fill it from the build sheet, the owner portal for that brand, or the original window sticker if the seller still has it.

VINs shorter than 17 characters

Pre-1981 vehicles used manufacturer-specific formats of varying length. vPIC won't decode them. For a 1972 Chevelle you're working from marque registries, casting numbers, and cowl tags instead.

The decode returns a different vehicle than the listing

Trust the decoder over the seller. Then figure out which one is wrong. Sometimes it's a lazy listing copied from a template. Sometimes the jamb sticker was replaced. If the dash VIN, the jamb sticker, and the title don't all agree, stop and get the car inspected by someone who knows what a re-stamped VIN looks like.

Recall lookup says the VIN is not recognized

Try again after confirming the VIN. If it still fails, the manufacturer may not participate in the VIN-level lookup, or the vehicle may predate coverage. Call a dealer for that brand.

Imports and grey-market cars

A JDM Skyline imported under the 25-year rule has a Japanese chassis code, not a US-format VIN. vPIC won't touch it, and neither will NMVTIS in most cases. Those purchases live and die on physical inspection and import paperwork.

FAQ

Is the NHTSA VIN decoder really free?

Yes. It's a federal government tool with no fee, no account, and no usage cap for normal use. The vPIC API is free too, which is why so many third-party sites, including ours, display the same specification fields.

Can a free VIN lookup tell me if a car has a salvage title?

Not through NHTSA. Specification decoding and title status are separate record systems. Title brands come from state DMVs through NMVTIS, and you'll need a report from an approved provider to see them.

Why does CARFAX or AutoCheck show things the decoder doesn't?

Because those companies aggregate event records (service visits, auctions, insurance and title data) on top of the factory specs. Specs are the free public layer. Event history is the paid layer, whoever you buy it from.

Does the decoder show mileage?

No. There is no mileage field, and there never will be, because the VIN encodes how the vehicle was built, not how it's been used. Odometer history requires title and inspection records.

How often is vPIC data updated?

Manufacturers file with NHTSA on a rolling basis, so brand-new model years sometimes decode with gaps in the first few months of production. Those fields usually fill in later.

Should I still pay for a history report if the decode and recall check both come back clean?

If you're about to spend five figures, yes. Those two free checks confirm the car is what it claims to be and has no flagged open campaigns. They say nothing about whether it was underwater in a 2024 storm or carried 40,000 more miles two years ago than it shows today.
